Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Demotic Egyptian Papyri and the Formation of the Hebrew Bible

Sub-project 2.2 (Wisdom Literature - Demotic Texts)

Dr. Robert Kade focuses on the most complex Demotic wisdom composition: the so-called Great Demotic Wisdom Book. His work benefits from the allocation of parallel manuscripts in the Carlsberg Papyrus collection in Copenhagen by external advisor Prof. Kim Ryholt. In particular, a highly-abbreviated version of the text (P.Carlsberg 2) is testament to the continuous reworking of an older composition by a scribal elite.

One of Dr. Kade’s main achievements so far is the discovery of several Demotic compositional strategies closely comparable to those applied in the biblical book of Proverbs. His forthcoming article, "Thinking Outside the Book – Discursive Wisdom in Egyptian Demotic Instructions," set to be published in Hebrew Bible and Ancient Israel 14 (HeBAI 14, 2025), explores these parallels in greater depth.

Dr. Kade is an engaged member of the academic community, frequently presenting his research at international conferences and workshops.
