Digital Humanities and Computational Approaches to the Bible

Panel host: Prof. Frédérique Rey, Dr. Sophie Robert Hayek, Dr. Davide D’Amico

The recent development in computer science and applied mathematics has radically transformed many existing fields. Biblical studies are no exception, and both new theoretical and practical approaches relying on digital tools have yielded some new results and new methodologies, opening up new research venues for scholars, theologians and computer scientists. Many new projects have emerged in the last ten years in digital and computational humanities, ranging from data collection and storage, to the development of new software and the application of artificial intelligence to uncover new patterns within existing data.

In this panel, we will present innovative projects and methodologies that rely on digital tools to analyze biblical texts, from a wide range of perspectives. Interdisciplinary presentation will be strongly encouraged, by bringing together scholars from both computer science and biblical studies. Potential topics for discussion include, but are not limited to:

  • Digital tools and methods for the analysis of biblical texts;
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration between computer science research and traditional approaches to biblical studies, such as comparison of automatically generated results with manual ones;
  • Applying digital methods to solve problems in humanities, such as applying machine learning models to generate new results;
  • Cultural heritage preservation and digital archives in biblical studies.

We encourage submissions that explore applications of digital and computational approaches to biblical studies.
