Prof. Dr. Dr. Bernd U. Schipper
Bernd U. Schipper has been teaching at the Humboldt University of Berlin since 2010. He previously held professorships at the universities of Bremen and Oldenburg and visiting professorships at the universities of Heidelberg and Harvard. His research interests include the history of ancient Israel, cultural contacts between Egypt and Israel in the 1st millennium BCE, and the Hebrew Bible and ancient Egyptian wisdom literature.
For his work on Egypt and the Hebrew Bible, Bernd Schipper was awarded an Advanced Grant of EUR 2.5 Mil. by the European Research Council in April 2021 (information on the associated research project can be found here).
Recent publications by him include a monograph on The Hermeneutics of Torah (SBL Press 2021), an edited volume on Elephantine in Context (Mohr Siebeck, 2022, with R.G. Kratz), and a volume on Gerhard von Rad and the Study of Wisdom Literature (SBL Press, 2022, with T.J. Sandoval). The second edition of Geschichte Israels in der Antike (Engl. trans.: A Concise History of Ancient Israel) and French and Korean translations of the book published by Beck Wissen are planned for 2023.
Bernd U. Schipper is a member of several international professional societies and has been an honorary member of the British Society for Old Testament Study (SOTS) since 2021. From January to July 2022, he was Visiting Professor at Harvard University (Divinity School), and in August 2022, he was appointed as President of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament (IOSOT) for a three-year term. Since November 1, 2022, Bernd U. Schipper has been Dean of the Faculty of Theology.
