Prof. Dr. Dr. Bernd U. Schipper
Bernd U. Schipper joined the Humboldt University in Berlin in 2010. He previously held professorships at the universities of Bremen and Oldenburg and visiting professorships at the universities of Heidelberg and Harvard. His research interests include the history of ancient Israel, cultural contacts between Egypt and Israel in the first millennium BC, and the Hebrew Bible and ancient Egyptian wisdom literature.
In April 2021, Schipper was awarded the highest European research prize, a European Research Council Advanced Grant of 2.5 million EUR, for his work on Egypt and the Hebrew Bible (information on the associated research project can be found here).
Current book projects involve the history of Israel, the Book of Proverbs, and the Joseph Story (Gen 37–50). Currently in press are the monograph The Hermeneutics of Torah (SBL Press 2021) and the edited volume Elephantine in Context (Mohr Siebeck, 2021).
Bernd U. Schipper is a member of several international professional societies and was made an honorary member of the British Society for Old Testament Study (SOTS) in July 2021. In the Summer 2022 semester, he will hold a visiting professorship at Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, MA, USA.
